New Mexico Brain Injury Advisory Council
The New Mexico Brain Injury Advisory Council (BIAC) is a program of the New Mexico Governor’s Commission on Disability. The council was created by statute in 1995 to advise the Governor’s Commission on Disability, The Governor, The Legislature and state agencies about concerns and issues related to brain injury. Members of the council are from all areas of the state and include individuals with brain injuries, family members, healthcare professionals and representatives from agencies that provide help for persons living with brain injuries.
Mission Statement
The BIAC supports evidence-based research and education and advises state, public and private entities to enhance the statewide system of comprehensive, community-based resources, services and supports that maximize the personal choices and functional independence of persons with brain injuries.
The BIAC also promotes prevention and increased public awareness to decrease the incidence and consequences of brain injuries.
Goals and Strategies for FY 2024-2029
Goal 1: The BIAC will educate communities on the signs and symptoms of brain injury and provide on the BIAC website the resources available.
Strategy 1: Identify all current curriculum and informative materials and make it accessible on the BIAC website.
Strategy 2: Develop informative resources to fill in the gaps identified in strategy 1 and make available on the BIAC website. Provide state agencies with an annual list of services in New Mexico.
Goal 2: The BIAC will identify the needs of those living with brain injury and current evidence-based treatments to meet those needs.
Strategy 1: The BIAC will compile a list of resources from state agencies and brain injury support entities.
Strategy 2: The BIAC will annually send a list of available resources to state and public interest groups to provide a gap analysis of services and supports.
Goal 3: The BIAC will increase awareness of brain injuries.
Strategy 1: Provide education and awareness to professionals and children within schools.
Strategy 2: Increase awareness of the New Mexico Helmet law and why helmet use is important.
Strategy 3: Increase brain injury awareness among vulnerable populations.
